Even though our family loves a Christmas tree and a big one I do like the idea of the alternative tree as well.

It's great on a budget or a small space.

Some long twigs or Catkin branches, sprayed white or silver or just left au natural!

Simply pop in a large vase & fill with heavy pebbles.

November is the time of the year when we wear a red poppy in memory of those who sacrificed their lives for us during wars.

The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marks the signing of the Armistice, on 11th November 1918, to signal the end of World War One.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."

Why The Poppy ?

The poppy has a long association with Remembrance Day. But how did the distinctive red flower become such a potent symbol of our remembrance of the sacrifices made in past wars?

Scarlet corn poppies (popaver rhoeas) grow naturally in conditions of disturbed earth throughout Western Europe. The destruction brought by the Napoleonic wars of the early 19th Century transformed bare land into fields of blood red poppies, growing around the bodies of the fallen soldiers.

In late 1914, the fields of Northern France and Flanders were once again ripped open as World War One raged through Europe's heart. Once the conflict was over the poppy was one of the only plants to grow on the otherwise barren battlefields.

The significance of the poppy as a lasting memorial symbol to the fallen was realised by the Canadian surgeon John McCrae in his poem In Flanders Fields. The poppy came to represent the immeasurable sacrifice made by his comrades and quickly became a lasting memorial to those who died in World War One and later conflicts. It was adopted by The Royal British Legion as the symbol for their Poppy Appeal, in aid of those serving in the British Armed Forces, after its formation in 1921.

My 7 year old son, Charlie had a school trip last week visiting The Super Hero supply store in Brooklyn NY.

On arriving you see a strange shop front.

Inside are the funniest things to buy in the store or at their online shop.

I really wanted to get my friend a tin of Dark Matter for her birthday.

You can also buy , Secret identity kits, and weird cans of silly things.

Once inside it is the Headquarters for 826 NYC , a not-for-profit writing program for children age 6 - 18.

They encourage writing in all forms , comics, poetry, stories. It also offers free after school tutoring on a drop in basis and they also host class trips.( New York only)

I was truly blown away with the whole idea the Staff and unpaid volunteers, Amazing!!!!

Bagpuss.

Halloween is around the corner and the kids are getting very excited about who they are going to be this year????

But then they asked who our cat, Parsley was going to be?...

I suddenly had a flash back to a show I used to watch as a little girl, Bagpuss.

Bagpuss was a British children's television-show that first came out on the BBC in 1974.

Bagpuss is a large cloth cat with pink stripes who comes to life when little Emily closes down her shop for the night. Accompanied by the little mice inventors and workers 'we will scrub it, we will rub it', and the pompous Professor Yaffel, he has all kinds of adventures.

And, of course, when Bagpuss goes to sleep,
All his friends go to sleep too.
The mice were ornaments on the mouse organ.
Gabriel and Madeleine were just dolls.
Professor Yaffle was a carved, wooden bookend in the shape of a woodpecker.
Even Bagpuss himself, once he was asleep, was just an old, saggy cloth cat,
Baggy, and a bit loose at the seams,

But Emily loved him

Little Critter and The BBC Magic Roundabout.

We went away to the country for the weekend and the kids Found 3 large furry caterpillars! Super speedy little critters.

I wanted to take them home for science class but the kids said no!!

Named them after the British BBC Show from the 70's The Magic Roundabout with Dougal, Florence & Ermintrude!

Dougal. can you see the resemblance?

Well I just did the laundry from our weekend away and out of the dryer fell a whole laundered furry caterpillar!

Dead but clean & smelling fresh. !! Mmm! Which child put it in their pocket??

A bit a bout The Magic Roundabout.
Created by Serge Danot in 1965, The Magic Roundabout became a television legend. The five minute slot just before the early evening news guaranteed the programme a viewing figure of over eight million.

This seemingly innocent children's animation series used a two pronged approach, featuring witty narrative targeted towards adults, allowing two generations to enjoy it. Flavoured with a laid-back and surreal look at life, the programme reflected a heavy sixties feel, soon achieving cult status.

The programme featured a rather off-the-wall cast:- Dougal, a shaggy dog who lived on a strict diet of sugar; an eccentric spring-mounted character named Zebedee, who would announce his arrival with a loud 'Boing'; a rabbit named Dylan, who could well have been accused of growing something considerably more envogue, during the 1960's, than carrots in his vegetable patch; Ermintrude the pink cow; Florence; Brian the snail, and all their friends in the Garden. Thus The Magic Roundabout very firmly staked its place in television history.

The catch-phrase of the series was of course "Time for Bed, Said Zebedee," sending millions of children to sleep every evening.

The Magic Roundabout was re-run on channel 4 television at the end of 1998, narrated by Nigel Planer, winning yet another generation of young fans.

The Kids Club FFRC!

Our children are very lucky to live around such wonderful neighbours and friends.

Four families are connected by keeping our gardens open so that all our children can play together safely.

It looks a bit like a Pagoda.

They can share the paddling pool , play football , roll on the grass and now 2 Super Dads & Uncle Captain Ping Pong decided to build a little play house out of bits of reclaimed wood and an old window hatch.

It blends in perfectly with the natural surroundings.

It even has its own veranda for hanging out.

The kids started to decorate it with their own pictures.

They have called it The FFRC Club, The initials of their names.

I have been following the new programme on Bravo TV recently Pregnant in Heels with Rosie Pope.

I love that she is a Brit too and the show is very entertaining especially her funky side kick Lawrence.

On the show she organises Baby showers, designs nurserys, teaches new parents about the baby and shows off her lovely collection of maternity clothes.

We met the fabulous photographer John Midgley about 5 years ago when my husband and John were working on a shoot together.

A fellow Brit we soon became great friends with all his family and by coincidence live behind each other with connecting gates so the kids can play.

He just snapped these great pictures on a very hot day when they had a water fight.

These photos were a surprise present for my 40th birthday.

The kids sneaked off to his studio. They presented them the night of my party framed.

Of course a cried on opening them.

I almost flew off my bike this week when I spotted these incredible cutouts from artist Beatrice Coron at the Muriel Guepin gallery.

Her technique is paper - cutting. Coron creates environments for words and thoughts in hundreds of surprising shapes.

Not only is he an amazing Art Director but also takes the pictures.

Here are some shots he took a few years ago for a magazine story about New York stoop sales, similar to British car boot sales except you sell your stuff outside your house on the steps.

I had the great privilege of working with the Vogue photographer Tim Walker pre marriage and children when I had a career doing shoot production.
His pictures always make me smile and just dream about living in Tim Walker Land.

This is one of the prints he gave me from the shoot we worked on.

It was great fun working with him...you never knew which unusual prop or set he was going to need next. So creative.

I had to show the Pastel cats shot!!

Sadly I missed his first major show at the Design Museum in London in 2008 when the publication of his first book 'Pictures' came out. PS. It's on my wish list!!!

I met the very talented Tamar Morgendorf at a Bubble Trade show in New York a few years ago.

She later moved into the Brownstone we had rented for 5 years and made the children's bedroom into her studio for her much needed growing business.

Everything is handmade using vintage fabrics.

As a newish Blogger we only just discovered them !! Yes we know a bit slow!

Living Etc. Magazine shoot

Know this is a little bit late now but had to post.

Look out for one of our nightlights in another issue of Living etc!

We had the great pleasure of welcoming The Living etc team into our house.

My favourite interior magazine!

Rather sad that my amazing sister Charlotte couldn't make it over for the shoot!

Maybe it will be her house next time!

Also if your are interested I will be posting the Before and After pictures of the house renovations.

A few years ago White Rabbit England were featured in a beautiful book, Babies' Rooms from zero to three by Judith Wilson.

A must have guide for decorating rooms for babies and small children. It really shows how to design neutral nurseries and sharing rooms with siblings.

The book shows Charlie and Florence's shared room at the time with our nightlights.

It's a great gift for new parents.

Hugo guinness

Most people probably know the fabulous work of Hugo Guinness. I am a huge fan, and have the great pleasure of knowing him, being a local in my neighborhood and a fellow Brit.

He showcases linoleum cut prints of normal objects we find at home.

My favorites are the botanical silhouette flower drawings.

I am lucky to have the underpants– a gift from my husband.

Le Jardin

Two years ago we bought an old run down house in Brooklyn NY.

The garden was a jungle and we just couldn't make out where it started and finished.
Anyway with a lot of back breaking work removing the mess we managed to clear a lot.

Oh my, you find so much rubbish in old gardens... no treasure though.

Then I had to start designing.

Having children and loving the sun I knew we needed,

play area, a sun deck, space for entertaining and of course plants .

Well, after a lot of hard work, and a deck that my husband built with our friend John it finally looked like a Brownstone garden.

There is still a lot more to do in the Spring, a dinning area and of course more planting.

A Snowy Winter Brooklyn Paradise

I wanted to show you what us Brooklynites do at the weekend when snow is solid on the ground. Hit the slopes!! Well, kind of. We head to a local beauty spot Fort Green Park for sledging. Its not quite St. Moritz but good enough for us.

Igloo

Also this weekend our friend and neighbor Shane built this amazing igloo in the garden for the kids or possibly maybe just for the men folk. We are very lucky to have 4 families with connecting gardens so all the children can play together in a safe environment.

Tie Backs

So I've been looking for some tie backs for my bedroom curtains and I need 6.
Always on a budget and not finding anything out there that I really like yet I found some really hideous and very cheap tie backs for only a couple of $ from a hardware store. Probably found them at Home Base or Home Depot.

How to make stained tie backs:

1 Tblsp gray paint in a bowl ( mixed a bit of pale blue)
add warm water
put tie backs in the paint and leave for about 10 mins to soak
take out and leave to dry on an old plastic bag
if not dark enough put them back in before drying

Florence's Room

So I finally finished my 9 year old daughter, Florence's bedroom. A bit tricky at the grand old age of 9!! Not a baby anymore and not quite a tween!! Well kind of !

So we choose the colour together. A Benjamin Moore paint (USA only) called Quiet Moments! Mmmm. not entirely sure that her room will have many of those??

Well as you start to follow our little Blog you'll soon realise that we are " Dumpster Divers" which means that we find a lot of great things people throw out!!
Found her bed head on the street. Its metal so no Bed bugs...
then I drew a tree shape image on one of her walls & painted it white! If I can do this anyone can.

We added a few cute things like this fantastic bird house from my good friend Tamar Morgendorff! Check back in later to find out more about her gorgeous creatures.

Of course our bone china Rabbit nightlight is every rooms essential accessory.

And Voila Florence loves it.

More ideas on Florence's room to come.

PS.If you would like me to try and match it to a UK colour I can try.

So Charlotte was showing our Collection at the fantastic Top Drawer Trade Show in London last week.
We shared a stand with our fabulous Dutch rep. Anne.
We were showing for the 1st time our New White Collection, featuring our family of Bone china Nightlights, Owl, Rabbit Mushrooms and a sneak peek at the new guy on the block Charlie Dog!

No School in New York!

So I woke up at 4 am this morning to this!!

My daughters wish had come true!

There have only been 8 no school days in NYC in 40 years & this was one!

Unfortunately next door neighbors tree fell across our stoop with the weight of the snow. So thankful

for friendly neighbors & hubbie to clear the mess.

For those of you that have never shown at a Trade show, let alone one in a foreign country that speaks a different language ( oh by the way they both spent last year learning Italian!! on Monday nights and are now fluent!!!!!! and with children) Wow!!!

ITS pretty frightening out there.

I unfortunatley can't go as in NYC and I really miss my sister, haven't seen her for 2 years!!

But we know we are going to do GREAT! RULE BRITANNIA

Well I thought I should post some pics from our 1 st Bubble trade show in NY.

Rather late I know.

It was rather nerve racking not having my sister & partner Charlotte here from England. But I had lots of support from friends, family who came to help & visit not to mention the lovely friends I made over the 3 days. Especially Jo & Mel from Poppy and Ned who had a beautiful stand with the most devine children's clothes and yes fellow Brits!!

Ok so I think I am on a roll.........

lets see ??? Oh Yes Got a cat!

The kiddys had been nagging me for a pet for quite a while, hamster, dog, giraffe etc.

Then one weekend in Brooklyn around Labour day we spotted this weird looking cat in a cage at a rescue pet adoption shop.

It looked really manky but we all fell in love with this poor unloved cat.

So we went to the playground & called Daddy. Of course he said no, but the kids & I talked it through, responsibilty & poo etc.

Anyway we got the cat. SOoooo excited.

We named him Parsely after an old childrens programme called The herbs about a Lion called Parsely.

Well he is doing really well now & has settled into the new home. We adore him.... he lies like a baby & snores like a piggy. Dad is still not sure.
